SL23: A Down Light Designed for Real Tree Installations

By Patrick Harders, LC

I’ve spent a lot of time installing lights in trees, and I know what it’s like to run wire
through branches and sweat on a ladder in the middle of summer. Many luminaires on the market today are built by people who have never done that kind of work. I always make sure my luminaires are built different, including the SL23 downlight.

A Collaborative Effort

When we first introduced the SL23 at the International Landscape Lighting Institute Conference (ILLI), I was eager to see how it would be received. The feedback we got from other lighting designers made it clear we were on the right track.

Little changes, like softening the corners or adjusting the shroud angle, made a noticeable difference in glare control and overall usability. I feel that this kind of intentional refinement is necessary for a high-quality luminaire. So the SL23 wasn't designed based on theoretical numbers but on real-world experience.

Thoughtful Optics and Glare Control

Downlighting should enhance a space without creating harsh glare. The SL23 produces a clean, soft wash of light without hotspots or distracting edges. The hex louvered lens and internal geometry keep the brightness directed on the intended area, not in your client’s eyes. The physical shroud controls output between 200 and 700 lumens, giving you the flexibility to create subtle ambient fills or more defined area coverage. The result is a more deliberate, balanced look for every project.

Built for the Climb

One-Handed Installation

I don’t want to spend any more time in a tree than I have to. I want to get the light installed, aimed properly, connected, and move on. The SL23 allows me to do that because I can install it with one hand. The bracket slides into place and locks down with a secure connection, so my other hand stays on the tree, the ladder, or my harness. It’s a safer, faster process.

Two-Point Mounting

If you’ve ever had a downlight shift in a storm, you know how frustrating that can be. One-point installs often rotate, loosen, and end up pointing in the wrong direction. They get you callbacks.

The SL23 solves that with two anchor points that lock into the tree and stay in place. That means fewer return trips and a more reliable end result for the client.

Your New Favorite Down Light?

I believe good design depends on using the right tools. The SL23 is a down light that gives me the control, consistency, and quality I expect from every installation. If you have a project that calls for downlighting in trees, I think you’ll find the SL23 will quickly become one of your favorites.
