SL13 Hanging Light: Where Subtlety Meets Precision

By Patrick Harders, LC

I’ve spent years on job sites: on ladders, wrapping branches, running wire through rain and mud. That hands-on experience is why I design our luminaires the way I do. My team and I are not just trying to build products; we’re solving real problems that we’ve faced ourselves. To us, it's not just a job; it's our passion.

In this industry, it's important to be constantly reevaluating and re-imagining. The SL13 Hanging Down Light was designed out of a simple question: how do you create soft, elegant lighting from above without seeing the light source and without harsh glare ruining the scene? I needed something discreet and refined, and I wasn't willing to compromise.

So we built a light that’s:

  • Adjustable from 50 to 250 lumens for fine-tuned control

  • Built with a 360° shroud and hex lens to eliminate glare

  • Equipped with a frosted lens for the softest output possible

  • Designed with a CRI of 96+ to bring the scene to life

When installed correctly, the SL13 gives you this gentle, even wash of light. There’s no glare in your eyes, no weird shadows, no noticeable distraction of a light hanging over your head. The shroud and frosted lens help make sure the only thing you’re noticing is the scene itself, not the equipment.

Let Your Space Breathe

If I had to pick favorite spots to use the SL13, they'd include:

  • Pathways that need a little softness

  • Benches or outdoor seating where harsh light ruins the mood

  • Tree-lined areas where uplighting feels too heavy-handed

This luminaire is not about brute force. It’s precise, deliberate, and lets the space breathe.

Clients may not be able to pinpoint exactly what's changed, but they'll feel the difference, which is what great lighting design is all about.

The Perfect Pair

When using the SL13, one of my favorite accessories is our Gripple System. This system lets you:

  • Wrap and secure the luminaire to tree branches cleanly

  • Adjust the height easily without damaging the tree or wire

  • Maintain proper strain relief for long-term durability

Technically, yes, it’s an accessory. But in practice, it’s essential.   In my opinion, if you’re hanging from trees and not using the Gripple System, you’re making your life harder than it needs to be.

Sometimes Less is More

Over the years, I've learned that less light can actually make the design feel more intentional. The SL13 is a result of learning that lesson. I love our down lights (the SL23, SL33, and SL13) but there's something special about the SL13 Hanging Light.

It’s subtle, but powerful. It brings softness into a scene without overpowering. It lets the light just float in like it’s always been there. That's when you start to realize how much of lighting design is about restraint.

The SL13 isn't flashy. But in the hands of a thoughtful designer, it becomes a powerful tool. If you haven’t already, I invite you to watch the video and hear more about the thought behind this luminaire. We built it for professionals like you—because we are professionals like you. And we believe subtlety, when done well, speaks volumes.
